A white - light trap for Bose - Einstein condensates
We propose a novel method for trapping Bose-condensed atoms using a white-light interference fringe. Confinement frequencies of tens of kHz can be achieved in conjunction with trap depths of only a few µK. We estimate that lifetimes on the order of 10 s can be achieved for small numbers of atoms. The tight confinement and shallow depth permit tunneling processes to be used for studying interact...
متن کاملEffectively attractive Bose-Einstein condensates in a rotating toroidal trap
We examine an effectively attractive quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms confined in a rotating toroidal trap, as the magnitude of the coupling constant and the rotational frequency are varied. Using both a variational mean-field approach, as well as a diagonalization technique, we identify the phase diagram between a uniform and a localized state and we describe the system ...
متن کاملSpinor Condensates and Light Scattering from Bose-einstein Condensates
These notes discuss two aspects of the physics of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates: optical properties and spinor condensates. The first topic includes light scattering experiments which probe the excitations of a condensate in both the free-particle and phonon regime. At higher light intensity, a new form of superradiance and phase-coherent matter wave amplification were observed. We also disc...
متن کاملQCD Condensates for the Light Quark V-A Correlator
We use the procedure of pinched-weight Finite Energy Sum Rules (pFESR) to determine the OPE coefficients a6, · · · , a16 of the flavor ud V-A correlator in terms of existing hadronic τ decay data. We show by appropriate weight choices that the error on the dominant d = 6 contribution, which is known to be related to the K → ππ matrix elements of the electroweak penguin operator in the chiral li...
متن کاملWhy trap light?
In 1865 James Clerk Maxwell showed how light propagates as electromagnetic waves. In 1984 it was realized that light can also be trapped1. My journey into this subject began as a PhD student at Harvard University, focusing on the possibility to trap or localize any classical wave in a suitable material2. This was not one of the ‘big questions of science’ at the time, but my supervisor Michael J...
